Ashwin Reveals CSK Approached Ashish Nehra Before Zaheer Khan
Chennai Super Kings engaged in discussions with Ashish Nehra over the head coach role prior to choose Zaheer Khan for IPL 2027, as revealed by R Ashwin. Zaheer Khan’s confirmation as coach occurred on September 21, under a one-year contract, succeeding Stephen Fleming, who left after 16 years and five IPL championships to assume the England red-ball coaching position in July 2026.
In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin remarked that CSK engaged in discussions with several contenders during their recruitment process.
Nehra, the present head coach of Gujarat Titans, led the team to victory in the IPL championship in 2022 and to the finals in both 2023 and 2026, solidifying his status as a significant coaching presence in the league.
What hindered the advancement of discussions with alternative candidates?
Ashwin suggested that CSK’s pursuit went much beyond Nehra. He remarked that two additional Indian legends and various international coaches were also evaluated during the process, however none of those agreements were concluded. The renowned cricketer elucidated the rationale for the non-progression of certain foreign hopefuls.

Zaheer Khan possesses substantial administrative expertise for the CSK position. He became the Director of Cricket for Mumbai Indians in 2018 and was promoted to Global Head of Cricket Development in 2022.
