Jasprit Bumrah Needs 6-Month Break: Ghavri
Jasprit Bumrah will miss India’s Test trip of Sri Lanka with a left knee injury. The two-match series begins on August 15 in Galle and is part of the World Test Championship.
Jasprit Bumrah, 31, returned to ODIs against England after 968 days away from the 50-over format. Jasprit Bumrah has been struggling with injury issues since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The pacer appeared in two ODIs against England, but knee problems prevented him from playing in the last match. The injury occurred in July while fielding in an ODI against England in Cardiff.
Jasprit Bumrah is now receiving rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, having been initially included in the Sri Lanka team pending a fitness test. Last month, his medical team gave him an injection in the hopes of hastening his recovery. Auqib Nabi will take over for him on the tour.
Karsan Ghavri, a former India pacer, suggested that Jasprit Bumrah take a long break—up to a year—to fully heal.
“Bumrah should take a five- to six-month, or even a year-long hiatus to regain full fitness. The problem is that he enters tournaments even when he is only half-fit, and then, due to poor task management, he fails halfway through.
This is unneeded. Only if he can handle his workload during a tournament could he be considered for the team,” Ghavri told the Mid-day.
Ghavri’s advise about taking extra time off
Ghavri pleaded with the selectors to bring experienced seamers to the national squad, like as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami. He also expressed concern about Bumrah’s absence from a series for the Men in Blue.
“Shami and Bhuvi have been playing consistently in the IPL without injuries and should return to the national set-up.” Selectors should think about them.
All fast bowlers suffer from niggles or injuries, but Bumrah has been on and off for the past two to three years. He has rarely played a whole series. “That’s not a good sign for him or the country,” Ghavri stated.
Raju Kulkarni: I don’t believe Jasprit Bumrah can continue to play all formats.
Even if the right-arm seamer insists on playing in all three forms, Raju Kulkarni, another former Indian fast bowler, believes the Indian team management should only allow Bumrah to play Tests.
Furthermore, he believed that rotating Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in Test matches and including Bhuvneshwar Kumar in T20Is would relieve Bumrah of some of the load.
“I don’t think Bumrah can keep playing all formats. The team management should consider playing him only in Tests, as this is a critical format.
Though he may desire to play IPL, T20Is, and ODIs, it is not feasible. As a result, Mohammed Siraj’s backing from seasoned pacers like as Shami and Bhuvi will be greatly beneficial.”
According to Kulkarni, Bhuvi’s success in the IPL merits his inclusion in T20Is. You may also alternate Shami and Siraj in Tests. “This will relieve pressure on Bumrah,” he added.
