Harry Brook Pays Tribute to Brendon McCullum After England Exit

Harry Brook, England’s white-ball captain, gave a heartfelt tribute to the former New Zealand captain after Brendon McCullum left his position as England’s Test head coach.

Harry Brook highlighted McCullum’s significant contribution to his career and commended McCullum’s impact on England’s red-ball setup throughout his tenure.

McCullum ended his four-year career as England’s Test coach after the team’s most recent Test series defeat. Since taking over in 2022 alongside then-Test captain Ben Stokes, the 43-year-old’s aggressive “Bazball” mentality has altered England’s Test cricket strategy. But a series of disappointing results finally brought an end to his term.

Harry Brook, who under McCullum established himself as a reliable member of England’s Test team, said it was difficult to accept the coach’s departure. After England’s six-wicket defeat to India in the first ODI at Edgbaston, the right-handed batter talked to media about McCullum’s influence on his career.

“I was definitely disappointed by it. He has undoubtedly had a significant impact on my career. Harry Brook told reporters, “I’ve only ever played under him, and he’s been amazing for me.”

“The things that he did for the Test side when he first came in, in the last few years have been phenomenal,” the England skipper said, praising McCullum for reviving the squad over the past few years and changing the Test team’s strategy. “He will be missed,” Harry Brook remarked.

Following Ben Stokes’ retirement from the game during the New Zealand series, Brook has been one of the front-runners to become England’s next Test captain. However, the 27-year-old stressed that the decision was entirely within the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

“I’m not in charge of making that choice. I will support them no matter what they decide; I am currently enjoying my position as white-ball captain. We’re moving in the right way, in my opinion, and whatever happens will happen. It’s not for me to decide that, as I stated,” he remarked in closing.

In the three-match ODI series between England and India, Brook is currently in the lead. The hosts are already behind 0-1 after losing the series opener at Edgbaston by six wickets, and the second ODI is predicted to be crucial to keeping the series going.
