Hardik vs Ruturaj: Dhoni Steps In
Hardik Pandya has emerged as one of the most sought-after names in the Indian Premier League (IPL) transfer market, having reportedly decided to leave Mumbai Indians (MI) following the franchise’s poor IPL 2026 campaign.
According to the most recent sources, three IPL franchises are interested in signing the star all-rounder. However, among those teams, Mumbai Indians’ main rivals, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), are considered the frontrunners to make what might be one of the biggest transfers in IPL history.
However, the agreement is not as simple as it appears, with one big issue apparently arising between Hardik Pandya and the five-time champions.
Hardik Pandya reportedly wants the captaincy at CSK.
According to sports journalist Rohit Juglan, Hardik Pandya made one point quite plain during the discussions. The Indian all-rounder allegedly wants to be captain if he joins CSK.
However, CSK is unwilling to accept that requirement. The organization believes Ruturaj Gaikwad is the team’s long-term captain and has no plans to replace him.Hardik requires captaincy at the moment. But CSK is in no mood to replace Ruturaj as the franchise’s face,” the journalist stated.
As a result, the captaincy has emerged as the most significant impediment to the much-discussed MI-CSK swap, with Hardik Pandya facing up against Gaikwad directly.
Meanwhile, speculations indicate that CSK legend MS Dhoni may intervene to help resolve the matter. Notably, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya have a close friendship, and their mutual respect has been evident over time.
At the same time, Ruturaj Gaikwad shares a particular bond with Dhoni. The former India captain has coached Ruturaj throughout his time at CSK and has backed him on multiple occasions.
In fact, when Dhoni decided to step down as CSK captain ahead of the IPL 2024, he personally handed over the leadership responsibilities to Ruturaj Gaikwad, demonstrating his trust in the young batter.
Now, it is thought that Dhoni might speak with either Hardik or Ruturaj and persuade one of them to remain without demanding on the captaincy. As a result, his involvement may become critical if CSK is to conclude the high-profile transaction effectively.
Which IPL teams can meet Hardik Pandya’s demands?
Although talks between the Mumbai Indians and CSK are still underway, there has been no definitive agreement reached. If CSK fails to find a solution, several other franchises may rapidly enter the competition for Hardik Pandya.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is one of the top contenders. Following the retirement of Ajinkya Rahane, the franchise is looking for a new captain, as well as an experienced Indian all-rounder.
Hardik excellently meets both objectives. After all, he has already demonstrated his leadership abilities by leading the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and then to another final in 2023.
Apart from KKR, the Delhi Capitals are also keeping a careful eye on the situation. According to reports, Axar Patel is now engaged in trade conversations. If the Indian all-rounder leaves the franchise, DC may hunt for a new skipper.
Furthermore, the squad requires an experienced Indian all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball. While they have international fast bowlers like as Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi, they may want a trustworthy Indian alternative as well.
