Zaheer Khan Could Take Over From Ajit Agarkar as Chief Selector
The BCCI plans not to renew Ajit Agarkar‘s contract as chairman of the selection committee, with Zaheer Khan identified as the frontrunner to assume the position. Agarkar is anticipated to leave the position at that moment, bringing his tenure with the board to an end.
According to earlier reports, conversations between the BCCI and Zaheer Khan for the role of top selector are already beginning. Agarkar’s contract started on July 4, 2023, and he will finish three years in the post in September, making him eligible for a one-year extension.
Despite his eligibility, the board is believed to have decided against providing him the extension. BCCI officials are also set to meet with Agarkar after India’s Test series against Sri Lanka to formally discuss his future with the board. Harbhajan Singh is also said to be interested in becoming the head selector.
Why isn’t Agarkar’s contract being renewed?
A long-standing disagreement between the selection committee and BCCI executives over how to handle older players, particularly captain Rohit Sharma, looks to be a major reason in the board’s decision.
According to The Indian Express, the selectors informed Sharma that he was being considered for expulsion from the squad following the England series in July. The BCCI disagreed, stating that Sharma’s situation should be evaluated on a match-by-match basis as India prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made the board’s position public, noting that Sharma will continue to serve the country as long as he is a part of it. That statement highlighted the disagreement between the board and the selectors on an important personnel issue. The BCCI has not provided an official rationale for its decision not to extend Agarkar’s contract.
Who could succeed Agarkar as Chief Selector?
Zaheer Khan is the most notable name associated with the position of chief selector.
The former India bowler is being seriously examined, particularly if VVS Laxman is appointed to a newly established Director of Cricket job. Laxman was an early candidate to directly succeed Agarkar, but he is said to have denied the top selector position due to the heavy travel required.
It is also important to note that Zaheer Khan candidature gets traction, particularly if Laxman becomes Director of Cricket rather than selection committee head.
Parthiv Patel has also been touted as a leading candidate for the role, however this assertion contradicts previous Zaheer Khan claims and remains unclear. The BCCI has not made any official announcements regarding the succession.
