Yash Thakur on Maiden India Call-Up for Zimbabwe Tour and Captain Shreyas Iyer

Yash Thakur, a pacer for Vidarbha, received calls and messages from friends informing him of his selection for the T20I tour of Zimbabwe while he was at the airport gathering his luggage.

Thakur has spoken candidly about the poignant moment when he was summoned to India for the first time.

Prior to being granted the opportunity, the fast bowler established himself in both domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. He maintained that the call-up was the result of years of diligent effort.

Thakur stated that his primary objective has always been to represent India, having progressed through the Under-19 circuit, Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, IPL, and India A.

In an interview with JioStar, the 26-year-old recollected the unique event: “Harsh Dubey and I had just arrived in Nagpur.” I received a call from some acquaintances as I was packing my bags and leaving, and my phone began to buzz with messages. They congratulated me, saying, “You have been selected!”

I was not aware of it at the time, so I conducted an online search and discovered that I had been selected for the Zimbabwe tour. Strangely, the sensation was odd. I have steadily progressed from Under-19 cricket to the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, IPL, India A, and now the Indian squad.

“I exerted a significant amount of effort to surmount each challenge that each level posed.” I derive immense pleasure from each ascent. I am unable to fully articulate the sentiment at this time, as it is the aspiration of every cricketer to represent their country upon commencing their career.

He stated to JioStar, “It is a sense of accomplishment that I am finally here, wearing the India jersey, after all the hard work.”

Thakur also discussed his rapport with Shreyas Iyer, India’s captain, with whom he had previously played in the IPL. The pacer stated that their current comprehension has significantly facilitated his transition into the national setup.

He declared, “Captain Shreyas Iyer is acutely aware of my capabilities.” He is aware of the aspects of the game in which I excel, whether it be the powerplay, the middle overs, or the death. He recognises the areas in which I have made the most significant contributions to the team’s success.

This mutual understanding was further developed as we discussed our plans for the IPL during our time together. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have represented Shreyas bhai in the IPL and to serve as the captain of the Indian squad in the future.

The right-arm seamer also praised Iyer’s leadership style, emphasising the captain’s composure and the confidence he instills in his bowlers by allowing them to execute their own plans.

“He is exceedingly composed,” he declared. Whether we are bowling well, giving up runs, or having a bad day with the ball, he never loses his composure. He remains composed in the face of adversity.

He consistently enquires directly with the bowlers, “What is your strategy?” What do you consider to be the most advantageous course of action in this circumstance? He refrains from imposing his beliefs on others.

Before making a contribution, he first listens. That has a substantial effect. In conclusion, he stated, “He is a bowler’s captain because he fully trusts his bowlers and allows them to execute their strategies.”
