West Indies Appoint Bob Carter as Batting Consultant

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has chosen Bob Carter as its new Batting Consultant on a one-year contract, effective September 1, 2026. Carter will work with all three levels of the program, including senior men’s and women’s teams, as well as age-group cricket.

Carter has been instructing at the elite level for more than three decades. He worked for New Zealand Cricket for 21 years, most recently as High-Performance Coach from 2012 until August 2025.

From 2019 until 2022, he served as the head coach of the New Zealand Women’s team. Carter was the Director of Cricket at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in England before to moving to New Zealand.

He also discussed his broader philosophy.

At CWI, his responsibilities include providing expert batting coaching to both established and growing players, as well as honing the batting program design skills of coaches already in place in regional and high-performance setups.

Miles Bascombe, CWI Director of Cricket, noted the volume of cricket ahead, pointing out that West Indies teams will compete in at least six major competitions over the next 24 to 30 months.

What will Carter’s responsibilities be across West Indies programs?

Carter’s first assignment in the role will be a regional tour in September 2026, during which he will visit all six first-class territories: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Leeward Islands, and Windward Islands.

The tour provides him with an early opportunity to evaluate batting skill and coaching capabilities across the entirety of West Indies domestic cricket.

The strategic timing of Carter’s arrival is directly related to the West Indies’ international calendar. The men’s team will compete in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in February and March 2027, so the board must focus on consolidating batting depth across the squad.
