Wasim Jaffer Analyses Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure With Trophy Record
Before India’s two-match away Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15 in Galle, former India opener Wasim Jaffer assessed Agarkar’s performance. Jaffer underlined the dominance demonstrated in limited-overs cricket while noting the observable results achieved during this period.
On July 4, 2023, Ajit Agarkar replaced Chetan Sharma as Chairman of the BCCI’s Senior Men’s Selection Committee. India’s white-ball teams have enjoyed significant tournament success after his appointment, winning the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2024 and 2026.

Player handling and clarity issues
Wasim Jaffer did, however, raise major concerns about the management of some players and the reasoning behind certain selection decisions.
He identified a number of situations in which the treatment of players, as well as the selection process itself, called for inquiry and debate. Despite trophy successes, Wasim Jaffer acknowledges that some players’ treatment and selections have been controversial.
There is Mohammed Shami, then Sarfaraz Khan, then we keep repeating Abhimanyu Easwaran’s name, now Auqib Nabi, who was not selected earlier and has now been selected as a replacement; all of these are things that I believe might be considered negatively.
“Why are these selections not happening, and why are players not getting clarity?” Wasim Jaffer asked.

The former opener’s comments imply that, while trophy successes corroborate the selection committee’s overall strategy, the technique and correspondence pertaining to the management of specific players are still up for debate.
The success in white-ball cricket contrasts with India’s performance in Test cricket at the time. In addition to losing home series against South Africa in 2025 and New Zealand in 2024, the team was unable to qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship final.
Agarkar’s contract was set to expire in June 2026, but it was extended for three months, allowing him to stay in the role until August of that year.
