Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Silence on T20I Captaincy Removal

Suryakumar Yadav was sacked as India’s T20I captain in June 2026, following the release of the roster for the England and Ireland series. The BCCI revealed the squads on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with Shreyas Iyer named the new captain of the Indian team for the white-ball series.

Suryakumar Yadav succeeded Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I captain in July 2024 and just won the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy with a 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final hosted in Ahmedabad.

Suryakumar Yadav was released from the team following a disappointing IPL season in which he scored 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.77.

Despite his record as a T20I captain, in which he led India in 52 matches and scored 1232 runs at an average of 28.65 and a strike rate of 154.96, he was removed from the captaincy.

Selectors assessed India’s form and preparations for the next two-year T20I cycle, keeping in mind the 2028 LA Olympics and the following T20 World Cup.
