Shubman Gill Up For India Test Leadership Challenge

Shubman Gill will continue to captain India’s Test squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka beginning Saturday, August 15. Since taking over when Rohit Sharma departed from the format, the rookie captain has successfully navigated the early portions of his tenure. Gill is ready for the first Test in Galle, having recovered from an injury scare during a warm-up game.

Matthew Hayden, a former Australian opener who was the Gujarat Titans’ batting coach in the 2026 Indian Premier League season, assessed Shubman Gill suitability for the Test captaincy role.

Hayden worked closely with Shubman Gill, the teenage hitter who led the club to the championship, and acquired insight into his leadership talents and temperament under pressure. “He has many challenges ahead of him, none of which is more important than the survival of Test match cricket,” Hayden told India Today.

According to Hayden, India’s Test cricket need attention in a variety of ways. The former opener said that while India excels in shorter formats, longer games demand more effort.

Hayden believes that retaining Test cricket excellence while managing resources across all forms poses similar challenges for the majority of cricketing nations.

“And I feel India are in a much better position to continue their winning ways in the short formats, 50-over in particular, and T20 cricket, and they do have some work to do as most nations do in and around their Test and longer formats,” Matthew stated.

Shubman Gill was named captain ahead of his unprecedented Test tour of England in June and August 2025, during which he demonstrated both technical proficiency and leadership potential. His hiring reflected the team management’s confidence in his ability to guide India throughout a challenging Test cricket time.
