Shubman Gill On Joe Root’s Mastery Behind England’s Win Over India
Shubman Gill, India’s captain, agreed that his team’s middle-order collapse was a turning point.
In the second one-day international against England on Thursday, July 16, at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the hosts chased down a total of 234 with four wickets remaining, drawing the three-match series 1-1.
India was well-positioned at 178/3 after opting to bat, owing to a crucial partnership between Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. However, in only 26 deliveries, the visitors crumbled significantly, falling to 193/7 before being bowled out for 233.
With Joe Root anchoring the innings with an undefeated 99 to lead the hosts cross the finish line in 44.1 overs, England made the chase seem easy.
Gill stated after the game that before their innings was delayed by the collapse, India had set their sights on a much higher score.
“We thought 300-310 would be a good total after 25 overs when we were in a good position, but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs,” Gill stated after the match’s presentation.
The captain of India believed that the lower middle order should have led the team to a more competitive total, but they failed to build on the good foundation laid by the top-order batters.
“Our tailenders are not the best batsmen, but we expected more from the lower middle-order batters, and they were not able to capitalise on their starts,” Shubman Gill stated.

India had to rely heavily on its frontline seamers as Sundar was unable to perform his job. Gill argued that the fast bowlers were still in a stronger position than the spinners.
“We had to bowl our main bowlers throughout the innings.” I don’t think it would have made much of a difference because the ball was doing more for the fast bowlers, but losing a major player does result in some momentum loss,” he added.

Shubman Gill was particularly proud of Joe Root, who led England to victory with a calm, composed innings and an undefeated 99. India’s captain acknowledged that Root’s strengths were bolstered by the low target, limiting opportunities for mistakes.
“We always knew that if the run-rate was five or more, we could have got a false shot out of him, but this kind of chase, he’s a master of these totals,” Shubman Gill said.
The three-match ODI series is currently tied at 1-1 following the loss, with the decider set for Sunday, July 19 at Lord’s. England will look to carry their Cardiff momentum into the last match, while India will attempt to comeback and win the series.
