Shubman Gill Hints at Difficult Team Selection Ahead of Test
Before the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15, 2026, India skipper Shubman Gill must make critical selection decisions. India, which is currently in fifth place with four wins, four losses, and one tie from nine games, will compete in the World Test Championship 2025-27 during the two-Test trip. Shubman Gill will spearhead India’s quest to improve its WTC rankings after being declared healthy after missing part of the team’s warm-up match owing to a finger injury.
Due to injury concerns, the team has undergone several adjustments. Jasprit Bumrah was initially nominated but then ruled out due to a left knee injury acquired during the ODI series against England.
Auqib Nabi took his place. Saransh Jain has joined the team as a substitute for Washington Sundar, who will miss the first Test. Sarfaraz Khan will meet the Indian squad in Colombo before their first Test in Galle.
Gurnoor Brar is known for his ability to extract bounce at a fast pace with the old ball. However, as evidenced by the warm-up match, Prasidh Krishna has recently been bowling well. So it’s a tough decision. Jasprit Bumrah is not here, but there is an opportunity for someone to step forward.
“It’s all about understanding the game’s pace,” Shubman Gill told NDTV Sports.
Player development and team self-assurance
In the absence of fellow left-hander Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal is expected to step in at No. 3, while Dhruv Jurel, who is under pressure, is expected to stay in the middle order despite his poor performance in the last few Tests.
After a year as Test captain, Gill believes he is improving with each match. After deviating off course in recent months, the purpose of this series will be to get the World Test Championship juggernaut back on track.
“Players will grow on their own. We need to give them time; some players take some time. I now feel at ease in my role as captain. Our goal is to remain in contention for a place in the World Test Championship final. We need to win six or seven Tests to do that. “So we want to start here,” Shubman Gill remarked.
