Saransh Jain’s Surprise India Selection: The Reason Behind His Call-Up
Saransh Jain, an off-spinning all-rounder from Madhya Pradesh, has received his first Test call-up by India for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. This honour is a testament to Jain’s exceptional domestic performances and his impressive performance for India A.
Washington Sundar, who sustained a hamstring injury during India’s recently concluded ODI series against England, was unable to participate in the inaugural Test.
Consequently, the 33-year-old has been included in the squad. Jain’s selection represents a significant milestone in his career, as he has secured his first opportunity at the highest level after years of performance in domestic cricket.
Strong performances in India A bolstered his argument.
Jain demonstrated his all-round capabilities during India A’s most recent tour of Sri Lanka, which significantly increased his chances. In Galle’s second unofficial four-day match, the off-spinner maintained an uninterrupted score of 70 before delivering a match-winning performance with the ball, capturing six wickets.
Jain’s capacity to contribute in multiple areas was underscored by his impressive performances with both the bat and the ball during the two four-day games against Sri Lanka A. His performances occurred at the appropriate time, rendering him a viable replacement option in the aftermath of Sundar’s injury.
The domestic performance backs selection is impressive.
Over the past few seasons, Jain has been one of the most consistent all-rounders in the Indian domestic circuit. He has amassed 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 in 54 first-class matches, including two centuries, and has taken 188 wickets at an average of 27.30.
He also had a remarkable Ranji Trophy campaign last season, accumulating 30 wickets in a mere seven matches, which served to bolster his eligibility for national selection.
Jadeja returns as India maintains its established squad.
In the interim, Ravindra Jadeja has returned to the Test selection following his recovery from a tennis elbow injury. India has essentially maintained the core of their squad, with Jasprit Bumrah returning to lead the pace attack.
Nevertheless, fitness clearance is required for both Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan. In the interim, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, has been excluded from the Sri Lanka tour.
The first Test of the two-match series will commence in Galle on August 15, with the second Test scheduled to take place at the SSC in Colombo on August 23. India will participate in a four-day practice encounter in Colombo, commencing on 7 August, prior to the commencement of the series.
