Rahane Opens Up on Retirement Thoughts

On July 30, 2026, Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from all cricket-related activities. The Indian hitter completed a 13-year international career that began in 2013 and included appearances for his country in all three formats.

Rahane played for India in 20 T20Is, 90 ODIs, and 85 Tests. In 85 Tests, he scored 5,077 runs, including 12 hundreds. His final outing for his country came in the 2023 away Test series against the West Indies. He decided to step down after considering his career and personal goals. Initially, it was overwhelming. “The realisation hasn’t fully sunk in yet,” Rahane explained on his YouTube channel.

Rahane admitted that it took him approximately a month to decide to retire. He is satisfied with the call, however, because he has continuously given his best on and off the pitch throughout his playing career.

“I am extremely pleased with the decision I made, because I had been thinking about it for 20 to 25 days – nearly a month. But in the end, the one thing I realized—and the reason I made this decision—is that I have no regrets. Whatever I wanted to try, whatever I wanted to achieve, or however much I had to give my all, I believe I gave even more than that,” stated the former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper.

Highlights of his career and performance as captain

One of the pinnacles of Rahane’s career came when he led India to an astonishing comeback series triumph over Australia in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In 2021, he replaced Virat Kohli as captain and led the team to a historic 2-1 series win in Australia, including a well-known Gabba victory. That triumph highlighted his leadership talents and ability to perform well under pressure on a global scale.
