Panesar Prefers Vaughan Over Fleming For England Coach Role
Monty Panesar, a former England spinner, questioned Fleming’s hiring, stating Michael Vaughan would have been a better fit. Panesar believes Vaughan’s leadership abilities and tactical expertise would have been more advantageous to England’s Test ambitions.
Fleming replaces Brendon McCullum, who was fired from the Test post by the ECB earlier in July 2026 but continues to manage England’s white-ball teams.
On July 30, 2026, the England and Wales Cricket Board named Joe Root captain and Stephen Fleming head coach of the England Men’s Test Team. Fleming, 53, has played for the Chennai Super Kings for 18 years and is New Zealand’s most successful Test skipper with 111 appearances.
Fleming guided CSK to five IPL championships and 10 final appearances while serving as coach. Fleming is now the head coach of a national team for the very first time.
“I believe the ECB should have appointed Michael Vaughan. Because he captured the Ashes in 2005. He knows how to orchestrate victory over the Australians. He’s an Englishman with perhaps the best man-management talents we’ve seen. “It’s a man-management role,” Panesar told The Indian Express.
Why Panesar believes Vaughan made a better decision.
The crux of Panesar’s argument is the distinction between coaching success based on personal leadership attributes and success based on individual talent.
He claims that, while Vaughan’s 2005 Ashes victory demonstrated autonomous tactical ability and man-management in a national team setup, Fleming’s record with the Chennai Super Kings was heavily influenced by the presence of MS Dhoni.
Vaughan displayed his ability to motivate and coordinate a squad without relying on a single star player by leading England to a historic series victory against Australia.
Panesar emphasised that Dhoni’s influence and presence on the team were critical to Fleming’s coaching success with the IPL franchise. Without the support and wisdom of the famed Indian captain, the former spinner questioned whether Fleming could repeat his feat.
“They chose Fleming, who does not have the great man, MS Dhoni. What makes Fleming an excellent coach? Dhoni. This is something we cannot forget. “He has been working with Dhoni for a long time,” Panesar stated.
After McCullum left, England’s Test coaching system changed dramatically with the hire of Fleming. After a period of change and transition, Fleming’s job is to restore success and stability to England’s Test program.
