Moises Henriques Retires, Begins New Chapter With Portugal

Moises Henriques, a former all-rounder for Australia, has announced his immediate retirement from domestic cricket. However, the 39-year-old has not completely retired from football, and after qualifying for the World Cup Qualifier, he is ready to represent Portugal, his birth nation.

Moises Henriques will be remembered as one of the greatest players in Australian domestic circuit history. The right-hander is the most capped domestic player in the country’s history, having made 420 appearances for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and New South Wales in various formats.

After the Sixers declined to extend his contract, Moises Henriques, who was retiring as a one-club player, revealed that he was interested in playing for other BBL teams. But he chose to focus on the next stage of his career while remaining loyal to the state of New South Wales.

“I’ve been extremely blessed to be able to call cricket my work for the past 22 years as a professional athlete. Other BBL clubs expressed interest in me, but it didn’t feel right to move on. I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone with whom I’ve had the privilege of playing and working.

If it hadn’t been for those relationships and the great concern I have for them, I’m sure I would have arrived to this point much sooner. “I think it’s time for me to call it quits on my career and start looking forward to the next chapter in my life,” Moises Henriques told Cricinfo.

Moises Henriques’ great achievements to the Sydney Sixers will also live on in memory.

He appeared for the squad in all 15 Big Bash League seasons, setting the league record of 154 appearances. The former Australian international led his team to three titles, including the first BBL season in 2012, with 3,324 runs and 22 wickets.

Henriques scored 70 runs in the second inning to earn Player of the Match honours as the Sixers defeated the Perth Scorchers in the championship.

Later that year, Henriques was part of the Sixers side that won the Champions League T20. Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, Nathan McCullum, and the current Australian fast bowling quintet of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc form a formidable team.
