Jonathan Trott Joins Ireland as Consultant
Jonathan Trott, a former England batsman and former head coach of the Afghanistan men’s cricket team, has been appointed as a temporary consultant by the Ireland men’s team, effective next week.
Jonathan Trott, a renowned top-order batsman, represented England Men in 52 Test matches, 68 ODIs, and seven T20Is between 2007 and 2015. He was appointed head coach of the Afghanistan men’s cricket team in 2022 and served in that capacity until February 2026.
However, Jonathan Trott had previously worked as a coach prior to his deployment to Afghanistan.
He had previously served as an assistant coach at Warwickshire, coached Kent and Scotland, and coached the England Under-19 Men at the 2017 ICC Under-19 World Cup.
He will be responsible for assisting the Ireland Men’s team with their series preparations and providing matchday advice during the ODI series against Afghanistan during his 14-day contract as a consultant.
According to Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland, Jonathan Trott recent association with Afghanistan will aid Ireland in preparing for the series, which he regards as an exceptional preparation for the ODI World Cup Qualifiers in early 2027.
“The preparation of the Ireland Men’s squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027 is contingent upon the upcoming One-Day International series against Afghanistan.” In an official statement released by Cricket Ireland, West stated, “This is a unique opportunity to introduce a world-class coach into the senior team environment, providing a wealth of current knowledge on the opposition.”
Jonathan Trott is in an ideal position to assist us in the strategic planning of the series, as he has previously worked with the Afghanistan squad. This experience will provide our players and staff with a fresh perspective, thereby enhancing their knowledge, skills, and comprehension of 50-over cricket.
Jonathan Trott value is not limited to player development; upon his arrival at the training camp, he will be able to impart his extensive leadership experiences to the coaching staff, delineating his approach to managing an international team and his philosophy of working with world-class players.
The inaugural ODI is scheduled to occur at the Bready Cricket Club in Bready, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday, August 5. The second one-day international (ODI) will be played at the same venue on August 7. The final three ODIs will be played at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on August 10, 12, and 14, respectively. This is Ireland’s initial assignment subsequent to their historic 2-0 triumph over India in the T20I series last month.
