Javagal Srinath Calls Test Cricket the Ultimate Format, Urges Youngsters to Focus

Former Indian bowler Javagal Srinath has urged young cricketers to take Test cricket seriously and not be lured by the glitz of Twenty20 competitions. Srinath, who played for India in all formats, made these statements at the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association’s Season Awards 2025-26, which were hosted at the Brilliant Convention Center.

Javagal Srinath highlighted that Test cricket is the cornerstone of a cricketer’s growth and should be the primary focus for prospective players.

He emphasised the link between Test cricket and other formats, emphasising how success in the big game applies to other forms of the sport.

Why is Test cricket important for young players?

Javagal Srinath perspective is based on his own experience as a fast bowler who took 236 Test wickets between November 1991 and October 2002. He also became India’s top ODI wicket-taker, with 315 wickets in 229 one-day internationals. His career illustrated the importance of mastering lengthier forms before moving to shorter variants.

The former bowler emphasised that the allure of Twenty20 leagues, particularly the Indian Premier League, should not eclipse the significance of Test cricket in long-term career development. He emphasised the importance of parents, state associations, and coaches guiding young players toward a long-term cricket career.
