Jacob Bethell Remains in Contention for Lord’s Test After Injury

Jacob Bethell, a batter for England, is anticipated to play in the first Test match of the home summer against New Zealand, which takes place at the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground on June 4. In order to receive treatment for his injured finger, the left-handed hitter went home from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Warwickshire youngster is anticipated to start the first Test match next week, but indications indicate the injury is not too serious.

“Following a review of Jacob Bethell’s left ring finger injury, he will continue to be monitored in the lead-up to the Rothesay first Test against New Zealand, starting on Thursday June 4 at Lord’s, and he is expected to be fit to play in the match,” an ECB statement read.

Jacob Bethell is currently being monitored by the medical professionals in England.

Jacob Bethell was a member of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team that won the championship. However, the opening batsman did not play in the defending champions’ victory against the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 since he quit the camp prior to the playoffs. The 22-year-old will not participate in the showpiece final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 31, as he has already returned to England.

The left-hander would bat at number three in the batting order if Jacob Bethell is selected for the opening Test match against New Zealand. After scoring an incredible 154 in the fifth Ashes Test match in Sydney earlier this year, he solidified his spot in the team.

In the meanwhile, if Jacob Bethell is unavailable for selection, England has substitutes in the squad. After a fantastic start to the 2026 County Championship, where he has scored 478 runs from six games, Somerset’s James Rew may be in line to make his international debut and take the RCB player’s place in the squad.

Due to his IPL obligations, Bethell was unable to play in the first Test match of the international summer against Zimbabwe last year. However, the all-rounder will now play in all six Test matches played at home, including three against New Zealand and the same number against Pakistan later in August.
