Ian Chappell Criticises Selectors Ahead of Australia vs Bangladesh Second Test
The team is attempting to prevent a series whitewash, and former Australian captain Ian Chappell has sharply criticised the selection decisions chosen for the forthcoming match.
After losing the first Test by nine wickets in Darwin, Australia will seek to redeem themselves in the second Test against Bangladesh, which begins on Saturday, August 22 in Mackay.
Chappell has expressed major reservations about the Australian selection panel’s approach to squad building and their capacity to handle the issues that have arisen. According to Ian Chappell, the selectors lacked comprehension in their decision-making process.
Changes required in the batting lineup
Following the Darwin loss, Ian Chappell called for specific adjustments to the batting lineup. Jake Weatherald has been omitted from the squad for the second Test, while Chappell wants Sam Konstas to return after being dropped during the West Indies tour. Chappell also suggests that Steve Smith go to third in the batting order, replacing Marnus Labuschagne.
Labuschagne’s recent form has caused concern. His most recent Test century came during the 2023 Ashes tour against England. Since then, Labuschagne has averaged 25.23 in 42 innings, with 959 runs, nine fifties, and a high score of 90. Chappell has also questioned the decision to bat seam-bowling all-rounder Beau Webster at number seven, despite his impressive first-class record.
Ian Chappell has also questioned the readiness of the emerging players chosen for the squad.
Ian Chappell Kellaway, 23, has a 31.52 average after 44 first-class matches, whereas Oliver Peake, 19, has an average of 26 after 14 first-class matches. Chappell voiced doubt that these guys are ready for Test cricket at this stage.
If Australia does not win the second Test, they would not only lose the series, but they will also lose valuable World Test Championship (WTC) points. The Pat Cummins-led team is in first place, but South Africa and New Zealand are closing in.
