Flintoff Moves From England Lions To BBL

Andrew Flintoff, who led the England Lions for over two years, has announced his departure. After returning to cricket, the 47-year-old took over leadership of the Lions program in September 2024. He is leaving to embark on a new coaching challenge later this year with Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League.

Flintoff served in a variety of capacities with the England and Wales Cricket Board during his tenure.

He helped prepare the backroom squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup and worked with England’s senior white-ball coaching staff. Before joining the Lions, he coached the Northern Superchargers of the Hundred tournament for two seasons.

“Unfortunately, I’ve decided to stand down from my role with the Lions. Not only have I loved the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but I have taken tremendous delight in seeing them progress,” Flintoff told the Lancashire Post.

“I’d want to thank the coaches and staff for their dedication, hard work, and support every day. In particular, Ed Barney, with whom I’ve enjoyed working and was really fortunate to be assigned as a performance director, and, of course, Rob (Key), for entrusting me with one of the most crucial responsibilities in English cricket. I can’t wait to start with the Thunder later this year and see where coaching leads me,” he said.

Ed Barney, the ECB men’s performance director, lauded Flintoff’s dedication to the Lions program and highlighted his influence on the environment’s development of young players. Barney noted that working with Flintoff during his tenure benefited coaches at various stages of their careers.

“Fred has helped to transform the Lions’ environment into a program that has had a significant impact on young players.” He has contributed to the development of a new generation of young players by fostering an environment that both supports and encourages excellence at all times. Coaches have thrived with him, whether they are new to coaching or have decades of experience, and he has constantly used the group’s skills. We wish him the best of luck in the next phase of his coaching career and look forward to seeing him return to the English game.” Barney said:

Mike Yardy will lead the England Lions in their four-day Professional County Club Select XI match against Pakistan, which begins on August 12 at Beckenham. This game represents the sudden transformation that occurred after Flintoff quit his job.
