Deep Dasgupta Compares Axar, Sanju Absence
According to Deep Dasgupta, Sanju Samson was not rested or withdrawn from the Indian team’s Zimbabwe visit. Rather, the former wicketkeeper-batsman believes his exclusion was motivated by India’s desire to test the opening combo of Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Sooryavanshi scored two half-centuries and was named Player of the Match, whereas Abhishek managed only 11 runs in three games.
According to Deep Dasgupta, Indian openers Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prabhsimran Singh, and Priyansh Arya are awaiting opportunities.
Deep Dasgupta also notes that Sanju should have played more in the previous series against England and that Axar Patel missed the Zimbabwe series.

According to Dasgupta’s YouTube channel, the player was chosen to assess his readiness at this level. However, only two openers are allowed to play. So Sanju wasn’t resting or being dropped.
It was done as a test to determine which of the three opening combinations worked best. Other options they haven’t tried include Shubman Gill, Sai Sudarshan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prabhsimran Singh, and Priyansh Arya.
Samson was sacked after failing to perform well in England’s first T20I and Ireland’s two T20Is. Deep Dasgupta argued that Sanju, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter, should have continued to bat at the top of the order rather than making room for Sooryavanshi.

India will not be playing Twenty20 International cricket for a time. Next month, they will play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The next ODI series will be three matches against the West Indies. Shreyas Iyer and his teammates will make their T20I comeback against the West Indies in a five-match series in October.
