Charlie Dean Opens Up on Captaincy Journey

Charlie Dean, who filled in brilliantly as England’s captain after Nat Sciver-Brunt’s injury this summer and appears to be her long-term successor, believes her leadership style has evolved in the months leading up to The Hundred 2026.

When the domestic T20 event begins on Tuesday, July 21, the 25-year-old England all-rounder will once again captain London Spirit.

Each team plays eight games in the group stages, which end on August 12. Dean will have another opportunity to develop in the job without having to cope with an injured mentor on the pitch thanks to Heather Knight’s new role as general manager.

Knight’s off-field role allows Dean to work independently while receiving instruction from the former England captain. “I’ve really enjoyed this year.”

I’m at a point where I understand my game well, can think about other people, and feel like I’ve made significant personal progress. Dean, as mentioned by ESPN, stated that he has gained confidence in public speaking and other areas that would have previously hindered him.

Charlie Dean owes her advancement to Knight’s influence.

Knight had a significant impact on Charlie Dean journey as captain. Knight joined Somerset as a player and advisor in 2025, and the two are still teammates there.

Charlie Dean underlined the significance of this position at London Spirit while acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining a balance between domestic leadership and international responsibilities.

Knight’s mentoring role provides Charlie Dean with the best of both worlds: independence on the field during games and advice from one of England’s finest leaders off it.

MI London, the most successful team in both competitions with three men’s and two women’s titles, faced Sunrisers Leeds in the tournament’s first game on Tuesday, July 21. The final is set for Sunday, August 16 at Lord’s. Dean believes that as captain, she will continue to develop and lead London Spirit throughout the competition.
