Ben Stokes’ Replacement Awaits ECB Approval

Ben Stokes’ Replacement Awaits ECB Approval

Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket a month ago, surprising the world. England’s first Test assignment without Stokes will be against Pakistan on August 19 in a three-match series.

The ECB is yet to declare the England Test squad against Pakistan, and the greatest concern is who will replace Ben Stokes. The forthcoming series will also usher in a new era for English cricket.

Stephen Fleming has been announced as the new coach, while Joe Root will serve his second term as Test captain.

Craig Overton expressed interest in taking Ben Stokes’ place.

In the most recent developments, England’s great all-rounder Craig Overton has shown an interest in replacing Ben Stokes in the Three Lions team. Overton last played for the Three Lions in 2022.

I would like to think so. Based on what I’ve done this summer, I believe I could be a contender, but there are many other talented cricketers vying for the position. It depends on the type of player they intend to fill the position with.

“I’m sure there are a few ways that they could go,” Overton said, as quoted by Cricinfo, when asked if he believes he is in contention for an international recall following Ben Stokes’ retirement.

The 32-year-old had an outstanding County Season, scoring 548 runs in 14 innings while averaging 45.67 with the bat. The right-handed batsman achieved three centuries, demonstrating his ability to strengthen the English middle order.

Craig Overton was outstanding with the ball, taking 33 wickets in 16 innings, including a five-wicket haul. Currently, England lacks quality all-rounders, which brings Craig Overton into the picture.

Craig, however, faces competition from his own brother Jamie Overton, who might also compete for the allrounder position following Ben Stokes’ retirement. However, when comparing the twins’ performances in 2026, Craig outperformed the CSK great all-rounder.

Jamie Overton concentrated on his white-ball skills and only scored 65 runs and took two wickets in County Division 2025. As a result, it should come as no surprise when Craig Overton is called up to the England squad after four years.

What’s Next for Ben Stokes?

Despite not being linked with England cricket, Ben Stokes is still creating waves on the local circuit. The 35-year-old is presently playing for Durham in England’s One-Day Cup, scoring 193 runs in four innings and taking two wickets.

According to rumours, Stokes is open to franchise cricket and is expected to sign a contract with the Sydney Sixers for the BBL 2026, making him the league’s most expensive player in history.

Stokes is also expected to enter the IPL 2027 auction, marking his return to the league after a lengthy absence.
