Ashwin Raises Question Over Rohit-Kohli’s ODI Future
Instead of waiting until August 2026 to decide on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the BCCI to make a decision now.
Given that the World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October to November 2027, the former India off-spinner believes that veteran players who have been with the squad for decades should be handled openly.
Ashwin believes that every month of clarity important for both mental and physical preparation, given that both veterans will be 39 and 40 by tournament time, respectively.
With Kohli approaching 39 and Rohit nearing 40, the 2027 World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October to November of the following year. Ashwin’s concerns extend beyond the simple selecting method.
If India wants Kohli and Rohit to compete in the 2027 World Cup, the team administration must make a decision now and give them full backing. A major competition like the World Cup cannot be won by young players, and seasoned cricketers who have dealt with pressure on the big stage will be invaluable when the team needs them the most.
“In all honesty, where does the speculation stem from? Someone somewhere is considering not attending the World Cup. I’m not sure who those people are. Some individuals will be sceptical, while others would want them to join the team.
“I personally believe you need experienced batters to play the World Cup in South Africa,” Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.
Preparing for the World Cup necessitates clarification on conjecture.
The uncertainty surrounding both players has hampered India’s World Cup preparations, which is unnecessary. When it comes to Kohli and Rohit possibly qualifying for the 2027 World Cup, Ashwin compares it to a marriage.
Although the players must be healthy and fit, they also require positive energy from the team management. If the management wants both of them to play in the 50-over World Cup in South Africa, and there is enough excitement surrounding it, it is entirely conceivable to keep them on the pitch and benefit from their expertise.
“If you want them, make a decision now and make them feel completely secure and confident over the following year. If you don’t make a decision now, it would be difficult since the same thing will happen again after one or two failures,” Ashwin explained.
The first position is available because Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan are both in terrific form and have a solid argument for inclusion on the team.
Ashwin believes that when young contenders stake their claims, it just strengthens the case for the BCCI to communicate properly and immediately. The younger players should have more opportunities, and Kohli and Rohit both need to be respected.
India’s next ODI assignment will be a three-match series against England beginning on July 14. Before the selection committee makes a judgement, both veterans will have the opportunity to bolster their World Cup credentials.
