Andy Flower Pulls Out Of England’s Test Coach Search

Following the Three Lions’ 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand, Brendon McCullum was recently relieved of his duties, and Andy Flower has ruled himself out of contention for the vacant England Men’s Test Head Coach role.

Andy Flower, who currently heads the London Spirit in the Hundred and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, indicated that he is content guiding the two teams on the franchise circuit and that, while he has held the role in the past, he feels more at ease with the current method.

“The bottom line for me is that I’m quite delighted with the work I’m doing right now. I work for a couple of excellent organisations. I have really good teams and people around me, and I feel quite comfortable with what I’m doing right now.

I’ve previously worked with England, and it was an incredible experience to be England’s head coach and represent England as one of its leaders a lot of years ago. I remember those years fondly, and it would be an honour for me or anyone else to be Test coach.

However, I am really comfortable with what I am doing right now. “I’m going to keep doing that,” Flower remarked during a media session for London Spirit, as reported by Cricinfo.

Richard Gould, CEO of the England and Wales Cricket Board, hinted that Andy Flower was the front-runner when he stated that the board was willing to enable the new Test coach to split time with the IPL.

Andy Flower has responded by admitting that balancing both duties can be difficult.

“Well, I can’t speak for other individuals, and it would be inappropriate for me to talk for the ECB, clearly. They will have to make their own decisions about that. Personally,

I don’t think I could have done both, especially because the IPL took place during the first few months of the English summer. If I were England’s Test coach, I’d want to be here observing and interacting with the people I wanted to observe and communicate with, so it wasn’t an option for me,” Andy Flower explained.

Andy Flower previously coached the England Men’s team from 2009 to 2014. The former Zimbabwean batsman led the Three Lions to one of their best runs in Test cricket, winning the Ashes at home and away, as well as a memorable series in India.

In the franchise circuit, he has also been successful, leading RCB to their first championship in 2025 and overseeing their successful defence in 2026.
