Andrew McDonald Shares Early BGT 2027 Plans
According to Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, the squad is already preparing for the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India. Several Test contenders are likely to begin adjusting to subcontinental conditions well ahead of the visit.
From January 21 to March 3, 2027, Australia will play a five-match Test series in India, their longest Test trip in nearly fifty years. Unlike previous overseas assignments, the visitors are unlikely to play a warm-up match before the series.
Instead, in order to help players adjust to the circumstances leading up to the high-profile encounter, Cricket Australia is considering organizing a pre-series training camp in India or at a neutral venue.
Andrew McDonald reports that players who are not set to play in Australia’s next home Test series against New Zealand may begin practicing for the India tour before the rest of the squad. To focus on training for the difficult circumstances, some players would even skip some of the Big Bash League (BBL).
Similar to the method utilized before to their 2023 visit to India, Australia is considering training on specially designed turning surfaces in home conditions.
In an interview with cricket.com.au, Andrew McDonald explained the team’s planning procedure: “We believe we have enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions.” We won’t be playing a practice game. It will simply be more focused on the location.
We have a few possibilities there. We’ve already visited the UAE and, most recently, Bangalore in India, so we’re just figuring out how we’ll manage the individuals.
Andrew McDonald noted that Australia’s selection for the India series may change after nine Test matches against New Zealand. Potential players include Matthew Kuhnemann,
Todd Murphy, Cooper Connolly, Peter Handscomb, and Matthew Renshaw. We may have some different players with different skill sets who we believe can perform in India, so it will not necessarily be the side that finishes the Test series (against New Zealand and then travels to India).”
Australia’s preparations underscore the significance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is set to take place in Nagpur on January 21, 2027. The challenging Indian conditions are expected to have a big impact on the outcome of the five-test series.
