Kohli Remembers Sir Garfield Sobers With Emotional Tribute

Sir Garfield Sobers, the late West Indies all-rounder, was the recipient of a poignant message from India’s Virat Kohli, who shared it on social media. Sobers, who was widely recognised as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, passed away in Barbados on July 17 at the age of 89.

Virat referred to Sobers as one of the greatest and asserted that his illustrious career would continue to motivate the younger generation for years to come.

It is important to note that Kohli and Sobers have participated in numerous meetings in the past. The duo most recently encountered each other during India’s 2023 tour of the West Indies. Sobers attended India’s training session with his wife prior to the first Test between the two teams in Barbados.

Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and the couple met at the conclusion of the session, engaged in a brief conversation, and even clicked photographs.

Garry Sobers, as he is more affectionately known, will always bear a lasting legacy in international cricket. The Men’s Cricketer of the Year award has been honourably named in his honour by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy was initially conferred to Rahul Dravid of India in 2004. Since then, it has been bestowed upon numerous legendary players, including Kohli.

The 37-year-old has received the award twice, in 2017 and 2018, which is the joint-most, along with Ricky Ponting and Mitchell Johnson of Australia. It is also important to mention that the right-handed batter was awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Award in December 2020 as the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Decade.

Virat is presently a member of the India squad that is touring England for a three-match ODI series. The series is currently tied at 1-1.
