Nitish Reddy Gets Sunil Gavaskar’s Backing After Afghanistan Performance

Nitish Reddy bowled a match-winning effort in India’s second Twenty20 International against Afghanistan on September 15, 2026, at Delhi.

The 23-year-old claimed three wickets for 24 runs, including Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, and Rashid Khan, as India triumphed by seven wickets with 31 balls remaining. Nitish Reddy performance earned him the Player of the Match honor.

Sunil Gavaskar lauded the 23-year-old all-rounder’s performance and asked the team management to help young batting all-rounders strengthen their bowling skills.

He also believes that seam-bowling all-rounders such as Reddy, Venkatesh Iyer, and Suryansh Shedge should be encouraged even when they have a bad game because they have a lot of potential.

Supporting young all-rounders throughout difficult stages

Gavaskar advised the club’s management to push the fast-bowling all-rounders to enhance their ball-handling skills, as they are primarily in the team for batting.

Nitish Reddy Return to International Cricket

Nitish Reddy returned to international cricket after his last appearance for India in the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June 2026. Following that series, a left quadriceps injury flared up, preventing him from participating.

The BCCI Center of Excellence authorized him to play in the Afghanistan T20I series after he completed fitness tests and match simulations, paving the way for his comeback in Delhi.
