Tamim Iqbal Says Bangladesh Premier League Unlikely to Take Place This Year

Tamim Iqbal, President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, has stated that the Bangladesh Premier League may not be held in 2026-27. The franchise-based T20 event, which has historically taken place in the December-January period, faces substantial challenges before the board agrees to stage it again.

The BCB chief has stated unequivocally that financial sustainability and operational excellence are non-negotiable requirements for the event’s existence.

Tamim ruled out rushing into the next edition of the league, stating that the BPL will only take place if it can be organised to the requisite standard.

The board has worked with franchise representatives to address fundamental issues, such as payment systems and financial assurances. These conversations demonstrate the BCB’s dedication to resolving systemic concerns before committing to a new edition.

Financial losses lead to postponement.

The financial losses have forced the board to reconsider the tournament’s viability in its current format. Franchise cricket is designed to produce cash for the board, not destroy its resources. The BCB chief has stated unequivocally that structural and financial difficulties must be fixed before the next edition can begin.
