Moeen Ali Criticises India’s T20 Batting Approach

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has blamed the Indian Premier League (IPL) for India’s recent poor T20 cricket results. After losing 2-0 to Ireland, the Men in Blue are now trailing the Three Lions 2-0 in a five-match series.

Ali has criticised the Impact Player rule in the franchise tournament for India’s loss at Trent Bridge. The Yorkshire player claimed that because Indian batsmen know they may add another batter in the final stages, they are forced to continue working hard despite losing wickets at the other end. The IPL’s Impact Rule appears to have eliminated the skill of building an innings in Twenty20 cricket.

Moeen Ali also objected to India’s decision to start Harshit Rana before designated all-rounder Shivam Dube during their 125-run loss to Nottingham.

In the IPL, the impact player has a significant impact. In T20 cricket, I believe they have lost the skill of batting. In the power play, it doesn’t matter if you are down three, four, or five.

Moeen Ali stated on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, “You are drafting a squad full of left-handers; you can’t just do that. Dube coming in at number eight and sending Rana ahead of him, I know it’s because he is a right-hander.

“I will always return to the IPL impact player. More than anything, I believe it is eliminating the skill of batting in many circumstances. You can’t simply go out and continue to struggle from ball one.

You must choose your team carefully. You can just add a batter or bowler when you have an impact player; you don’t need to choose the squad carefully. But once you choose a side in these circumstances, there’s no like,” he continued.

After being dismissed for just 76 in the second innings while pursuing 202 in the third Twenty20 International, India suffered a heartbreaking loss. The manner the Indian batsmen lost wickets, particularly during the powerplay, was remarkable; people kept slogging in spite of the disaster at the other end.
