New Zealand Cricket Releases Four-Star Casual Contracts
For the 2026–2027 season, four seasoned white-ball players have signed casual playing contracts with New Zealand Cricket (NZC): Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert.
The four will be able to continue balancing franchise cricket and international commitments while still being available for national selection thanks to the agreements, which go into effect on August 1. The four players are expected to be available for New Zealand’s home white-ball series against India in October and November in an effort to earn spots in the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Allen, Ferguson, and Seifert had all signed casual contracts the season before, and Milne has now been added to the roster for the upcoming campaign.
The casual contract style allows players to play in franchise leagues across the globe while still being a part of the Blackcaps establishment. Given that they are all regarded as white-ball specialists, it appears doubtful that any of the four players will be chosen for New Zealand’s Test matches against Australia, India, and Sri Lanka later in the season.

All four players are obviously talented and capable of winning games, and we have witnessed them do so for the Blackcaps numerous times.
The selection head, Gavin Larsen, was reported by Cricinfo as stating, “We see that as a positive as they’re able to add to their experiences and bring those back to our environment. Their skills are in demand around the world.”
“There’s no secret the in-bound India mega-tour is of critical importance to New Zealand Cricket on and off the pitch,” Larsen added, highlighting the importance of the next home series against India, which would have a packed international schedule.
We know we’ll need a deep team, especially in the pace-bowling department, to be at our best throughout the various series because the trip consists of ten white-ball games spread over 25 days, followed immediately by a block of six Tests,” he added.
The four players are playing in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 season rather than New Zealand’s ODI side during the current series against the West Indies.
Ferguson and Allen haven’t played since 2023, and Milne last played ODI cricket in 2024. In 2025, Seifert briefly returned to ODI cricket after a six-year absence.
“My passion and motivation to play for the Blackcaps and represent our country remains as strong as ever,” Seifert said, expressing his excitement for the new contract and stating that it allows him to play franchise cricket while being faithful to the Blackcaps.

Notably, when New Zealand Cricket released its men’s central contracts last month, fast bowler Blair Tickner was added back to the list after being excluded before.
