Ramesh Says Gill Is His Top Pick
Sadagoppan Ramesh claims that Sanju Samson’s exclusion from India’s T20 team was done with the goal of later reinstating Shubman Gill. The wicketkeeper-batter was left from the team for the upcoming three-match Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe.
Former India opener Ramesh asserted that the decision-makers’ reluctance to publicly express their preference for Shubman Gill was the only reason Prabhsimran Singh replaced Samson for the game against the Chevrons.
“It’s terrible that Samson isn’t even on the squad. I view this differently than many, who may believe that Prabhsimran Singh deserves this opportunity.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Ramesh stated, “They are taking this route to ultimately select Shubman Gill because they didn’t want it to look blatantly obvious.”
Last year, some supporters objected to Shubman’s selection as India’s vice-captain in the Twenty20 format, claiming that the current selection committee was overly favouring the Punjabi batsman. It was thought that Shubman will eventually take over as India’s all-format captain in Twenty20 Internationals, replacing Suryakumar Yadav.
However, the right-handed batsman was dropped from the T20 team after a string of disappointments, including a lacklustre Asia Cup showing the year before.
It is challenging to keep Shubman off the team because of his high run total in the Indian Premier League (IPL) throughout the years. Even this year, the 26-year-old had an amazing season, finishing second only to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with 732 runs at a strike rate of 163.03 in 16 innings.
It’s interesting to note that Shubman led the Men in Blue on their last five-match T20I series visit to Zimbabwe after the 2024 T20 World Cup. This time, the side will be led by Shreyas Iyer.
Nonetheless, India needs to focus on the present circumstance, which is the five-match Twenty20 International series against England. They are trailing 0-1 with three games left.
