Mohammad Amir Ends Speculation Over Pakistan Comeback
Mohammad Amir has clearly ruled out a return to Pakistan cricket following his gain of British citizenship and the contractual commitments that come with his status as a local player in English domestic events.
The left-arm bowler, who retired from international cricket on December 14, 2024, has now launched legal action that will ban him from representing another country in the same role.
Amir discussed the binding nature of his new position in English cricket. Players who compete as locals in English domestic events such as county cricket and The Hundred must sign a paper stating that they would not represent another country as a local player.

Mohammad Amir contractual position in English domestic cricket provides a legal obstacle to future Pakistan selections. The agreement he signed as a local player in county cricket and The Hundred contests expressly prohibits him from representing another country in the same role. This restriction applies to all players who compete as locals in these English competitions.
His gain of British citizenship through his wife, Narjis Khan, was formally certified in June 2026, around the time Nottinghamshire signed him up for the 2026 Vitality Blast.
The combination of his British passport and the contractual duties he has undertaken in English domestic cricket virtually rules out any international return to Pakistan.

Mohammad Amir international career with Pakistan spanned several forms and yielded noteworthy results. He got 119 wickets in 36 Tests, 81 in 61 One-Day Internationals, and 71 in 62 Twenty20 Internationals.
His performance at the 2019 ODI World Cup was particularly impressive, as he became Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets in eight matches. He had his best statistics of 5/30 against Australia during the competition.
The pacer’s trip to this point featured two international retirements. He first stepped away from Pakistan cricket in December 2020 due to conflicts with team management.
However, he reconsidered his decision and returned to the Pakistan team ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, after nearly four years away from international cricket. His most recent retirement, in December 2024, appears to be permanent, given his contractual obligations in England.
Mohammad Amir contractual position prevents him from representing Pakistan in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 4 to November 21.
