Bangladesh’s WTC Final Dream Gets Boost After Strong Performances, Says Bashar
Habibul Bashar, Bangladesh’s top selector, has voiced optimism in his team’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship Final. The team returned from their trip of Australia on August 25, 2026, following a 1-1 draw in two Test matches.
Bangladesh is presently ranked fourth in the WTC standings, with six matches remaining in the 2025-27 calendar. The team has made great progress in recent months, including a historic first-ever Test victory on Australian soil in Darwin and a 2-0 series whitewash of Pakistan earlier this year.
Bashar discussed his team’s position in the title battle and the accomplishments it has made in recent months. The selector cited Bangladesh’s recent strong performances as proof of their progress and ready for future challenges. The team’s fourth-place finish with 40 points and a win percentage of 55.56 puts them within striking distance of the top two spots required to go to the final at The Oval in June 2027.
Upcoming Tests and the Road to the Final
Despite the confidence around recent results, Bashar noted that his squad still has a long way to go before establishing itself as one of the world’s top Test teams.
Bashar also stated that Bangladesh’s performances in Australia had gained the team more respect, which was one of their goals prior to the visit.
Bangladesh will host the West Indies for a two-match series later in 2026. Following the home series, the squad will go to South Africa in November for a two-match Test series.
