Kagiso Rabada Suffers Right Hamstring Injury During Winter Training

A right hamstring strain experienced during winter training has hampered Kagiso Rabada‘s preparations for what promises to be South Africa’s most gruelling home summer in recent memory.

The injury creates uncertainty in South Africa’s planning at a vital time. Kagiso Rabada has already been rested from the squad’s trip to Namibia next week for a T20I tri-series with Zimbabwe and three ODIs against Namibia.

The board cited workload management as the reason for his absence from that tour, which also applied to the majority of the frontline pace attack and both captains, Temba Bavuma in white-ball cricket and Aiden Markram in red-ball cricket.

According to Cricinfo, Cricket South Africa issued a statement on Friday, August 21, confirming the setback and revealing that additional assessments are planned, though no severity grading or return timeframe was revealed. South Africa’s home season begins in September, when Australia arrives for a series of one-day internationals followed by three Tests.

Kagiso Rabada is key to the red-ball strategy, and additional Tests against Bangladesh and England are scheduled between November and January, making his fitness a top priority for the selectors during the summer.

What is known about the injuries, and when will assessments be conducted?

Cricket South Africa has announced that Kagiso Rabada right hamstring was injured during winter training, disrupting his program. Aside than that, the board has not specified the nature or severity of the injury, and no recovery date has been made public. Further assessments are planned, and his availability for the home season will be determined once they are completed.

A rib injury kept the speedster out of South Africa’s Test series against India in late 2025, which the side won 2-0 without him. His most recent Test performance came in Rawalpindi in October 2025, when South Africa tied the series 1-1 with Pakistan. Following that, he competed in the T20 World Cup and the IPL, but was not selected for the MLC or the Hundred.

Which games are at risk, and what additional injury worries do South Africa have?

With the home season starting in September, the ODI and Test series against Australia are the most immediate events that could be impacted if Rabada requires further recuperation time.

The ensuing Test series against Bangladesh and England in November and January would also be at risk, considering that South Africa is the reigning World Test Championship champion and will be expected to field their strongest available attack throughout.

There is also a problem with the A-team setup. Senuran Muthusamy, a left-arm spin bowling allrounder, has been ruled out of South Africa A’s first unofficial Test against Bangladesh A due to a lower back spasm.

Muthusamy was a member of South Africa’s Test squad during the subcontinent trip in 2025 and is expected to contribute as the team attempts to defend its World Test Championship crown. The two injury worries put Cricket South Africa’s medical and selection team under significant pressure ahead of a busy international schedule.
