Manjrekar Reacts to IPL Players Finding Success in Test Cricket

Sanjay Manjrekar has voiced his surprise at how cricketers developed in the Indian Premier League and T20 formats have excelled in Test cricket, despite the considerably different demands of the lengthier format. The former India batsman used an unexpected musical comparison to highlight the difficulties he sees in such a transformation.

During a broadcast debate, Manjrekar underlined the differences between the two forms and the challenges he foresee in transitioning between them. He used a classical music analogy to describe the IPL generation’s surprising success in Test cricket.

Why does Manjrekar find the format transition unusual?

The batting requirements for T20 and Test cricket are fundamentally different. In T20 cricket, hitters must take an offensive stance from the start, scoring rapidly and taking calculated risks to maximise runs in a limited number of overs.

In contrast, test cricket requires patience, concentration, and the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time while systematically developing an innings.

Manjrekar described batting as the most pronounced change between formats. The adjustment from an aggressive, risk-taking mindset required in T20 to a calculated, defensive approach required in Tests is a big mental and technical leap for players used to shorter forms.

Manjrekar has previously stated that Test cricket requires hitters to go near to the ball, which is a key principle that differs significantly from T20 posture.

How IPL experience influences Test cricket performance.

The IPL has provided Indian youngsters with constant exposure to high-pressure T20 cricket, as well as the opportunity to learn from experienced international players in shared dressing rooms.

This experience has produced a generation of players with extensive T20 expertise and exposure to world-class cricket at an early stage in their careers.

Several IPL players have effectively transferred their style to Test cricket, exhibiting the ability to control their aggressive inclinations when the situation requires it.

India’s current Test squad contains some players who honed their abilities primarily through IPL involvement, but have managed to perform well in the lengthier format by adapting their batting philosophy and game awareness.
