Hardik Pandya’s GT Return Blocked Over Captaincy Demand

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya‘s desire to return to the Gujarat Titans (GT) has failed after the club refused to accept his demand for captaincy. Discussions between Pandya’s side and the franchise began prior to the IPL 2027 trading window, and the captaincy demand proved to be the breaking point.

Hardik Pandya position with the Mumbai Indians has been under intense criticism following a dismal IPL 2026 campaign. MI won just four of its 14 games, ended ninth in the standings, and went six seasons without a championship.

The squad’s overall performance was as disappointing: Ryan Rickelton finished 17th in run-scoring and 14th in wicket-taking, with no MI player in serious contention for either the Orange or Purple Caps.

Hardik Pandya spokesperson then disputed that the all-rounder had participated in any direct discussions.

Why did GT reject Hardik Pandya captaincy request?

Shubman Gill has emerged as a key figure in Indian cricket’s leadership system. He leads India in Test cricket and has been named ODI captain ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Asking the franchise to remove him from the same position at the club level was never a viable option for GT management.

The Gujarat-based franchise was willing to evaluate a deal solely on cricket grounds, but reinstating Hardik Pandya captaincy would have necessitated the removal of a leader who is responsible for both the franchise and the national level. Once that condition was presented, the franchise’s position was firm, and no further negotiations occurred.

Hardik Pandya experience across both franchises serves as the backdrop for this situation. He was released by MI in 2022, joined GT, and guided them to the IPL title in their first season.

GT finished as runners-up in 2023. He returned to MI ahead of the 2024 season, taking over as captain from Rohit Sharma.

That first campaign finished with MI near the bottom of the table with Pandya experiencing persistent animosity from home fans. A minor recovery in 2025 provided some comfort, but the 2026 season erased much of that progress.
