Azmatullah Omarzai Reprimanded by ICC for Dissent at Umpire’s Decision
The International Cricket Council has issued a reprimand and one demerit point to Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai for a dissent incident during the second ODI against Ireland at Bready. The decision was confirmed on August 11, 2026, the same day the contest took place.
Omarzai was found to have broken Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, which concerns conduct including visible disagreement with an on-field official’s decision during an international match.
The four match officials who filed the charge were on-field umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black, third umpire Johnny Kennedy, and fourth umpire George Brolly.
The series of events occurred during Afghanistan’s batting in a match cut short to 47 overs per side due to weather. When Omarzai was removed in the 41st over, he did not quickly vacate the crease and expressed his displeasure with apparent gestures directed at the decision.
He later admitted the infraction and agreed to the penalty proposed by match referee Dean Cosker of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees, resulting in the case being handled without a formal hearing.
The demerit point is Omarzai’s first disciplinary action in 24 months.
According to ICC regulations, a Level 1 infraction of this sort may result in an official reprimand, a financial penalty of up to half of the player’s match fee, and one to two demerit points.
