Ashwin Shares Untold Story Of Manjrekar Dispute

Ravichandran Ashwin concluded his international career with 765 wickets in all forms, establishing himself as one of India’s best bowlers. His total comprised 537 Test wickets, 156 One-Day International wickets, and 72 Twenty20 International wickets, making him the second-highest international wicket-taker in Indian cricket history.

Ravichandran  spoke openly about his long-standing feud with cricket analyst Sanjay Manjrekar, which began from criticism he received early in his career. The off-spinner said that Manjrekar had questioned his fitness during his first Australia trip, claiming that it had an impact on both his bowling and fielding performances.

A turning point in their relationship.

Ashwin was highly hurt by the remarks at the time. Rather than dismissing the criticism, he internalised it and used it as motivation to enhance his fitness and general performance. For several years after the initial story, Ashwin communicated with Manjrekar seldom.

Manjrekar’s perspective evolved in 2015, when he published another piece recognising Ravichandran metamorphosis and applauding his bowling performances. This piece was a turning point in their relationship.  Recognising the importance of Manjrekar’s previous words in driving his growth, Ashwin contacted him to express his gratitude for the original criticism that had encouraged his work ethic over the years.

Following his international retirement, Ashwin continued to play cricket in different formats.

He competed in Major League Cricket, expanding his playing career beyond the international level. He was also signed for the Big Bash League the previous season, but he did not participate due to an injury.
