Joe Root Named England’s Test Captain, Selector Explains Choice

Joe Root, who had resigned as England’s Test captain in 2022, was restored on Thursday, July 31, 2026. The selection for England, Marcus North, explains why Joe Root was chosen over Brook. According to him, Brook remains an important member of the team, and his leadership in white-ball cricket grows with each series. In 2026, England’s T20 team topped the world rankings, highlighting Brook’s impact in the format.

“I think Harry Brook has obviously been a fantastic player for us across all three formats.” He remains an extremely valuable member of the team. Why was Joe Root chosen instead of Brook?

North stressed that Brook has not been disqualified as England’s possible Test captain despite this. Although he is convinced Brook’s time will come, he believes England is fortunate to have a seasoned leader like Joe Root to oversee the Test team at this moment.
