John Turner Ends Cricket Career Early After Back Problems
At the age of 25, Hampshire and England seamer John Turner announced his retirement from professional cricket. The right-arm fast, born in Johannesburg, cited a chronic back stress fracture as the reason for his choice. He hasn’t played cricket since June 2025.
Turner appeared for England in four international matches in 2024, taking three wickets in two one-day internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals against the West Indies.
At the time of the announcement, he had two years left on his Hampshire contract and a development contract with the ECB until late 2025.
Hampshire’s match against Sussex at Southampton on May 23-25, 2025, was his final first-class outing. John Turner studied finance and economics at the University of Exeter after leaving cricket.
“I have, however, decided to retire from the game, and as you can imagine, this has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make.
The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, as well as my injury record, naturally made me think of my future both as a cricketer and away from the game, and subsequently, I decided now was the right time to pursue my next challenge,” John Turner said in a statement.
“It was always my dream to play professional and international cricket, and doing so for Hampshire and England has been nothing short of living out those same childhood dreams,” he said.
Was John Turner availability impacted by the back stress fracture?
John Turner stress fracture prevented him from playing cricket after June 2025, over a year before he announced his retirement in August 2026. According to his own account, the injury was part of a longer trend of fitness issues that forced him to reconsider his future in and out of the sport.
He had two years left on his Hampshire contract, however he retired due to personal and medical reasons rather than a contractual expiration.
Turner termed the decision one of the most difficult of his life because the injury effectively destroyed his chances of playing county or international cricket again.
What influence will John Turner retirement have on Hampshire cricket?
John Turner played for Hampshire in two One-Day Cup finals and four T20 Finals Days in the five years leading up to his retirement. The county’s seam attack was already weak due to his absence since June 2025, and his retirement fills that need.
Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, paid tribute to the departing sailor.
“John Turner is an exceptionally talented player, and all of Hampshire Cricket is saddened that his journey in the professional game has come to an end.
He gave everything for the club and for England, and whilst we are saddened that he has called time on his playing career, we wish him all the best in his next chapter, and we will look forward to welcoming him back in the future,” White said.
“The opportunity and belief the club showed in me are something I could never thank them enough for. I have experienced more over the last few years than I could ever imagine, and none of that would be possible without the support from everyone at the club,” Turner said.
