BCB Rejects Reports On Saikat’s Contract Exit
Umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat’s association with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ended naturally after his extended contract expired in April 2026, according to a formal clarification issued by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
The BCB made it clear that there was no termination, and that the board simply chose not to seek another extension when the term expired.
Following numerous media reports describing the development as a contract termination, the explanation was released on August 4, 2026. The BCB acknowledged that Sharfuddoula’s status may have been uncertain as a result of those reports.
After his initial contract with the board expired in December 2025, it was extended to April 2026. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has addressed media reports about ICC Elite Panel Umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat’s involvement with the Board, which may have caused confusion about his current status, according to Cricbuzz. No further extensions were requested.
Why did BCB chose not to extend Sharfuddoula’s contract beyond April 2026?
The board plainly attributed the decision to Sharfuddoula’s increased workload on the international circuit. The BCB cited Sharfuddoula’s increased officiating workload as an ICC Elite Panel umpire as a potential barrier to his participation in the board’s initiatives.
His contract terminated in December 2025 and was then extended to April 2026. Following the completion of the extended term, no further contract extensions were pursued, citing Sharfuddoula’s growing responsibilities as an ICC Elite Panel Umpire and the possibility that these would limit his ability to contribute to the BCB in the same capacity. His last contract with the Board ended in April 2026, according to the board statement.
Sharfuddoula made history in March 2024 as the first Bangladeshi umpire to be appointed to the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. This success considerably enhanced both his global recognition and the amount of missions he received from the ICC.
How does Sharfuddoula currently interact with the BCB?
Despite the end of the contract, the BCB confirmed that Sharfuddoula is still available to serve on the board on a case-by-case basis. Depending on his availability at any particular time, the board may select him for domestic First Class, List A, and T20 events, as well as bilateral overseas series.
“It should also be noted that placing ICC Elite Panel Umpires under central contracts is not common practice among Full Member countries, owing to the difficulty of balancing their international officiating obligations with the scheduling requirements of national boards.”
The BCB, on the other hand, may use Sharfuddoula in bilateral international series as well as domestic First Class, List A, and T20 events, depending on his availability.
