Scott Edwards Hands ODI Captaincy to Bas de Leede

On July 31, 2026, after the Utrecht leg of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, Scott Edwards resigned as captain of the Netherlands ODI squad. His replacement, Bas de Leede, will lead the team for the remainder of the competition.

After the first game of England’s tour of the Netherlands in June 2022, the 29-year-old succeeded Pieter Seelaar as ODI captain. In 56 One-Day Internationals, he captained the squad, winning 24 and losing 29. Edwards notified his teammates of his decision following the Utrecht matches.

“I apologise for sort of throwing this on you guys. I am truly stepping down from the captaincy from here. I think, sure, it’s something Cookie [Ryan Cook, the head coach until June 25] and I have been talking about, and I’ve been talking to a few different people about it, and this feels like the appropriate time for me, I think,” Scott Edwards told Cricinfo.

Among the most notable results under his leadership were victories over South Africa in Dharamsala and Bangladesh in Kolkata during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The 26-year-old captain recognised Scott Edwards’ contribution to the team and took over the ODI captaincy.

Scott Edwards captained the Netherlands in 50 of his 86 T20 internationals, including victory over South Africa and Zimbabwe at the 2022 World Cup. South Africa was eliminated as a result of their victory in that competition.

De Leede, the Netherlands’ top player without a doubt, has now taken over as wicketkeeper-batsman. “It doesn’t just set the team up for success, but it also sets individuals up for success.” And I believe we should all be grateful for a guy who is so altruistic as to put others in the greatest possible position to perform.
