Sam Hain Injury Blow for Warwickshire Before One-Day Cup

Warwickshire have suffered a huge setback after Sam Hain was ruled out for the rest of the One-Day Cup due to a knee injury.

The experienced batsman, who won two ODI caps for England in 2023, suffered the injury in Warwickshire’s first game of the tournament against Northamptonshire and is anticipated to be out until at least mid-August.

Hain had recently been named captain of Warwickshire’s One-Day Cup team and scored an outstanding 80 in the club’s first match before injured his knee while fielding.

Scans performed last week revealed the severity of the injury, pulling him out of the race. Rob Yates has recently taken over as captain, with Ed Barnard away on Hundred duty for Sunrisers Leeds.

Warwickshire has struggled in Sam Hain absence, losing all three of its initial matches to finish last in Group A.

Despite a lack of opportunities in List A cricket, Sam Hain has had another successful domestic season. He had a great List A average of 58.18 and was unlucky to be undrafted in The Hundred draft despite constantly scoring in the T20 Blast, where he averaged 43.71 with a strike rate of 140.36.

Sam Hain absence might also jeopardise Warwickshire’s County Championship title hopes. The team is now third in Division One, five points behind defending champions Nottinghamshire, with six games remaining. Sam Hain has been Warwickshire’s best run-scorer this season, with 622 runs at an average of 62.20 in 14 innings.

Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire have recruited Scotland international George Munsey for their next two One-Day Cup matches due to injuries to Jack Haynes and Ben Slater.

Munsey, who was Nottinghamshire’s leading run-scorer during their journey to the T20 Blast semi-finals, will play against Leicestershire and Lancashire before joining Scotland for Cricket World Cup League 2 matches against the UAE and Canada.

He could return to Nottinghamshire if they go to the One-Day Cup knockout stages later this month.
