Sunil Gavaskar Reacts to India’s Poor Form, Calls for Introspection
Following their recent results away from home, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has stated that the Indian squad must be more astute and proactive in their approach to the game.
Although the 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe appeared encouraging, both analysts and fans have scrutinised India’s performances in England and Ireland. In their first match since winning the T20 World Cup in March of this year, the Men in Blue were crushed 2-0 in Belfast by a determined Irish squad.
They lost their top spot in the ICC rankings after losing 4-0 to England in the five-match Twenty20 International series. India defeated 2-1 in the three-match ODI series, with their only win of the tour coming at Edgbaston.
According to Sunil Gavaskar , the squad needs to enhance its ability to pick its moments and play shrewd cricket in different situations.
Short-pitched bowling in England typically caused Indian hitters to suffer, and Sunil Gavaskar stressed that the squad’s opponents should be chosen with care.
“The team has a lot of hard work ahead of them. A good, honest evaluation on one’s weaknesses and how to overcome them is urgently required. Shot selection is critical, and the batter must control his ego and avoid trying to live up to an image, instead playing the ball on its own merits.
Above all, it is critical to play smart cricket. Determine which bowler does not need to be counter-attacked. “Then target the bowlers against whom you can make up for the quiet over from the better bowler,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar, according to the Hindustan Times.
India’s fielding performance throughout the tour was poor due to misfields and wasted opportunities. Sunil Gavaskar emphasised the need of the entire squad improving its fielding and game-planning abilities.
He stated that there is no need to panic, and that the only things that need to be rectified are minor issues that require reflection.
“Most importantly, if a player is an average fielder, he must be released. There is no way a captain can hide three or four players and hope the ball doesn’t get near them. The bowlers must also examine the slow bouncer once more to see how well Sam Curran used the slow, loopy deliveries.
As previously stated, there is no need to press the emergency button just yet. However, there is a lot of honest introspection needed. If the Indian team wants to regain its winning ways, more attention must be placed into the execution of each individual’s specialisation,” he added.
India’s next Test match will be held in Sri Lanka, where they will play a two-match series beginning on August 15. The series will be held in Colombo and Galle.
