Ben Stokes Eyes Franchise Cricket After England Retirement
Durham head coach Ryan Campbell has addressed Ben Stokes‘ future intentions with the county and the possibility of playing franchise cricket in the coming months. The former England Test captain joined Durham as a professional player after retiring from international cricket.
Stokes would be eligible for selection in a limited number of One Day Cup and County Championship fixtures, as per Campbell. The all-rounder defeated Derbyshire in the 50-over competition by scoring an undefeated century on his comeback to represent his county.
“He is now a retired Test superstar who has reported back for duty for Durham. Therefore, we will essentially set a course that will involve playing in the One-Day Cup and playing as many of the six four-day matches as possible.
“We will undoubtedly monitor him if his loads are exceedingly high; however, he is a resilient individual. Durham coach Ryan Campbell stated to the BBC, “He will participate in every game we can at this time.”
Campbell suggested in 2027 that Stokes would like to play franchise cricket worldwide.
The 54-year-old coach also disclosed that the Durham management will endeavour to negotiate an agreement with the now-retired left-handed batter for the upcoming seasons.
“I would have anticipated that would extend to the following year,” he stated. We will first have to sit down and negotiate a contract for him, a task that we have never previously undertaken.
But, after listening to him, I believe there are a few franchise realms that he will be interested in exploring, and when combined with our material, I believe it will be quite thrilling for him.
Stokes has not been involved in franchise cricket since his tenure with the Northern Superchargers (now Sunrisers Leeds) in The Hundred 2024. He was only able to play in three games before sustaining a hamstring strain.
Before sustaining a knee injury, he had only appeared in two matches for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League the previous year.
