David Warner Pleads Guilty to Driving Charge

After pleading guilty to drink-driving, David Warner’s captaincy of the Sydney Thunder could be called into question.

Warner was not required to appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday, but his lawyer, Bobby Hill, said the batter admitted to the mid-range drink-driving charge from Easter Sunday.

“The parties are in discussion about the facts,” Mr Hill stated.

David Warner tested positive for alcohol after stopping short of a roadside test in Sydney’s east on April 5.

When transported to Maroubra Police Station for a supplementary test, the 39-year-old blew 0.104, which is more than twice the legal blood alcohol limit.

Mr. Hill hinted at a guilty plea when the case was originally discussed in May.”He realises what he did was wrong,” he remarked at the time. “He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber.”

According to Mr Hill, Warner drank three glasses of wine at a friend’s flat before making the decision.It is not illegal to drink wine on the day of the Lord’s resurrection. In fact, some would find that perfectly acceptable,” he told reporters. “His crime is, as I said, choosing a foolish plan A instead of a plan B.”

Mr Hill stated that David Warner last drink was 11 minutes before he was stopped over by police.

David Warner was remorseful and would seek compassion, but he expected to be punished as any other citizen, according to the lawyer. Warner’s punishment was set for August 18.

The captain’s admission of guilt has raised questions about his position with Thunder, who were contacted for comment following the plea.

“The allegations are of course concerning, and we take them very seriously,” Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said following his arrest. “At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not drink-driving.”

Thunder, along with the Sydney Sixers and the NSW Blues, are part of a state government initiative to discourage drunk driving.

David Warner was arrested during an Easter trip home from the subcontinent, where he captained the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League.

David Warner had been barred from holding leadership posts for the rest of his life following his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering controversy in South Africa, but this was reversed in 2024, and he was chosen Thunder captain shortly thereafter.
