Broad Calls for Bowling Change After India Loss
Following their defeat to India in the opening match in Birmingham on Tuesday, July 14, former fast bowler Stuart Broad has urged England to reassess their ODI team. The Three Lions’ poor performance in 50-over cricket over the previous few years was exacerbated when they were defeated by six wickets.
Broad has advised that England drop a spinner in favour of another seam-bowling option. Currently, Harry Brook’s squad includes up to five spinners in the starting lineup, which is unnecessary in both English conditions and South Africa, the location of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
“England is ranked seventh in the world, and they are performing accordingly. They require greater experience with the roles of the participants. Looking ahead to the next World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, faster, taller bowlers will do the most damage.
Given the make-up and balance of this side, with Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks, as well as the part-time spin options of Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, I’d prefer to play an extra seamer rather than a spinner because it gives that bowler experience and exposure to match situations,” Stuart Broad told Sky Sports Cricket.
The former player, who is now an analyst, also stressed the importance of having a bowler who can take wickets in the middle overs rather than relying too heavily on guys like Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer. Despite being England’s third seamer, Sam Curran’s bowling style is better suited for the death than the middle.
Brydon Carse’s comeback from injury has significantly improved the 2019 world champions’ bowling performance. Durham’s seamer may replace a spinner in the second ODI in Cardiff due to his bat talent in the last seconds.
I look at Archer; he’s a natural wicket-taker and the best white-ball bowler we have. Tongue can take wickets. Rashid can take wickets. But I believe England needs one more fast bowler to supplement that bunch. Sam Curran is an excellent player, but he isn’t a first-choice seam bowler.
England need someone to come through in the middle overs, bowl bouncers and seamers, and take the outside edge, so they don’t have to rely on Archer all the time.
Could this be Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, or Saqib Mahmood? “England should start testing that now,” Stuart Broad remarked.
England’s automatic qualifying to the 2027 Cricket World Cup is under threat. Brook’s team is currently rated ninth in the ICC ODI Rankings, which is the last position required to qualify for the competition.
