Karthik Raises Questions Over Gambhir-Agarkar Bond
Following India’s disappointing Twenty20 International campaign in the United Kingdom, former India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik warned that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar may disagree.
India’s visit under interim skipper Shreyas Iyer was disastrous, with a 2-0 loss to Ireland before England defeated them 4-0 in the five-match Twenty20 International series. Gambhir has been under fire for his poor performance, and the tour’s team selection has also received criticism.
One of the most hotly debated matters was the handling of Sanju Samson and rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old was expected to make his T20I debut against Ireland after impressing in the 2026 IPL. Samson, on the other hand, remained in the starting lineup until three subpar performances led to his benching.
Samson was eligible to rejoin the team after Sooryavanshi was given a chance, but he failed to impress and was benched for the fifth Twenty20 International against England.
According to Dinesh Karthik, the frequent changes in the starting lineup indicated that the coach and selection panel may not be on the same page.
“There is some conflict between the chief selection and the head coach. I believe Agarkar has long-term goals, and the present coach has stated, “You know, I want to win every game I play.” As a result, we are witnessing a state of bewilderment. Is it best for the players? “Definitely not,” Karthik stated on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
He went on to remark that such uncertainty may have an influence on players’ confidence, especially in a squad with tight competition for slots.
“I mean, if you are from India, image your bench strength? Everyone believes that if I have a few terrible games, anyone can replace me. Furthermore, when this occurs, it is unquestionably a matter that India must become aware of and address as quickly as possible,” he added.
Dinesh Karthik also stated that Agarkar and Gambhir may have different agendas when it comes to selecting the team.
“I believe Chief Selector Agarkar has an eye on the future and wants to see the group of players around. Meanwhile, Gambhir might be thinking, “I want to win every series because my name is on the line.”‘ So, maybe there’s a dispute; it appears so,” Karthik replied.
“Friction between the chief selector and head coach Gautam Gambhir regarding team selection are clearly evident. This is not good for the players and the team.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already announced that it will evaluate the team’s campaign in light of India’s poor T20I results in the United Kingdom.
